Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the association between suicidal ideation and family cohesion-adaptability among school adolescents. Methods: Quantitative, non-experimental, cross-sectional correlational study including 205 fourth- and fifth-year secondary school students aged 14-19 years, selected by stratified random probability sampling. An adapted 18-item version of the Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI) and the 20-item FACES III were administered. Spearman correlation was used. Results: Overall, 61.5% of participants were female and 54.6% were in the fourth year of secondary school. According to the instrument categorization, 55.1% were classified as having a high level of suicidal ideation, 41.5% a medium level, and 3.4% a low level. Family cohesion-adaptability was moderately low in 35.6%, moderately high in 25.9%, high in 26.8%, and low in 11.7%. Family cohesion-adaptability was inversely correlated with suicidal ideation (rho=-0.724; p<0.001). Inverse correlations were also observed for wish to live or die (rho=-0.449), suicidal thinking (rho=-0.470), suicide attempt dimension (rho=-0.482), and hopelessness (rho=-0.728), all p<0.001. Conclusion: Better family cohesion and adaptability were associated with lower suicidal ideation. The cross-sectional design precludes causal inference, and instrument categories should not be interpreted as clinical diagnoses.
